INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION

“Animals have a way of finding the people who need them and filling an emptiness we didn’t know we had.”

In order to help you prepare for this decision, kindly familiarize yourself first with the Requirements for Transporting a Rescue abroad. Please note that the process will vary depending on the destination. It can take almost 4 to 6 months before a rescue is ready to fly out to his / her new family. Currently, we only have experience with transporting Rescues to Canada, USA and Switzerland.

Rescue Transportation to Canada

Note: as of September 28, 2022, Canada has issued an IMPORT BAN from Countries classified as high risk for Dog Rabies, which includes the Philippines. A Rescue will have to be declared as an owned pet by the Adopter or a Flight Volunteer.

The basic process for transporting a rescue to Canada is to declare the pet as Excess Baggage. This is cheaper than booking a Pet Transportation Service because you are only paying for the extra baggage with your flight. But to allow this to work, we have to either: have the Adopter book a flight with the Rescue or find a Flight Volunteer with an existing flight to Canada.

CHECKLIST

1. Check whether your flight allows pets as cargo or not. You have to contact your airlines directly. In our previous cases, PAL accepts pet cargos. Inform them that you will be adding a pet as excess baggage.

2. Prepare the total weight of the cargo: weight of dog, and crate dimensions and total weight with dog. Better to also crate train your dog already to prepare him for the flight. The airlines will ask for this information.

3. Prepare the necessary documents:

  • Veterinary Health Certificate with actual signature from the Vet (issued not more than 3 days before appointment at BAI), request for 2 copies
  • 5in1/6in1/8in1 vaccines and anti-rabies vaccines administered at least 30 days before the flight (Please don’t forget to bring the actual vaccine record of the dog)
  • Microchip card

4. Pre-Register on the BAI Website: https://nvqsd.bai.gov.ph/

5. Travel to BAI to get your International Shipping Permit (Valid for 10 days). Process the permit at least 5 days before your Flight.

REQUIREMENTS AT THE AIRPORT:

– Original and duplicate copy of the international travel permit from BAI
– Original veterinary health certificate
– Vaccine record of the rescue
– Microchip card
– Please put water bottle in the crate

As long as your pet’s vaccinations are updated, preparation time should only take around 2 WEEKS. No quarantine needed in Canada.

Approx. cost is P25K to 30K if you process the papers on your own. It’s around P80K if via a pet transportation company because they will handle everything.

Rescue Transportation to USA and Europe

Summary of Process:

The dog will be microchipped, vaccinated and neutered in the Philippines. Medical check-up will be done to ensure that the dog is healthy for travelling.

The total processing time for the adoption will be a minimum of 4 months. This is due to the prerequisite vaccination and tests that we need to do before the dog is allowed to travel. This is an EU-wide policy for transporting dogs from countries considered as High-Rabies locations (Philippines is included in the list). The official start of processing will be the day when the Microchip is implanted and the Rabies Vaccination is done.

Step 1: Pet Microchip that is ISO 11784/11785 certified (c/o Petdentity Philippines)
Step 2: Primary or Booster Rabies Vaccination after the Microchip is implanted (mandatory to be done and recorded with the microchip when the vaccination was done)
Step 3: after 30 days minimum, take a blood test for the Rabies Titer Test
Step 4: The dog will only be allowed to travel after 3 months from the date the blood was extracted for the Rabies Titer Test
Step 5: Prepare all necessary permits and travel documents in parallel (some permits can only be obtained 10 days before travel day)
Step 6: Decide if transport is via Flight Volunteer or via Manifest Cargo

The Pawssion Project Team will handle all the necessary preparations for the paperworks and bookings but it is agreed that the adopters will shoulder all travel-related expenses for the dog.

All related costs to the whole process are to be shouldered by the Adopter. The Pawssion Project Team can provide groundwork and paperwork assistance if needed.
